5th November 2009Deadline’s on Work Place Agreements 20th Nov 2009
Just a reminder to all growers contemplating a workplace agreement. Growcom is currently working with more than 250 enterprises at present, to help horticulture employers get their workplace agreements in place before 1 January next year. Growcom has five dedicated staff working almost around the clock to provide professional advice and assistance. But time is very quickly running out!
Agreements take a minimum of 4 weeks to complete, from first notice to employees to final lodgement with Fair Work Australia (FWA). It is vital for employers to get the process started ASAP to ensure the process can be completed by the end of the year.
Growcom advises members and growers that requests for assistance with workplace agreements received after Friday, 20 November will carry no guarantee of completion (i.e. lodgement with FWA) by the end of the year.
Growcom is aware that this places employers in something of a dilemma – the outcome of the award modernisation process, and therefore the new Horticulture Industry Award 2010, will not be known until very late in November, or, more likely, early December. While our belief is that the new award will not ‘undercut’ the current Queensland award provisions (nor provisions contained in registered workplace agreements), it will be the decision of the Full Bench of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), who will make the final award in line with the procedural requirements set down by the Minister. See article on Award Modernisation below for detail.

Draft National Fruit Fly Strategy Implementation Action plan
Comments and responses from all stakeholders are encouraged over the next two month period on the Action Plan. In particular:
· Is the technical approach presented in the Plan appropriate and effective?
· Are there any key fruit fly management components not adequately addressed by the NFFS Implementation Committee Action Plan?
· Are there any other additional projects that can be identified and what outcomes would be achieved from them?
· Should any of the projects and initiatives be undertaken as a matter of priority?
