Australian Summerfruit Re-launch in Taiwan after 5-Year Absence

Thursday, 17 February 2011

Summerfruit Australia officially re-launched the nectarines and peaches on 13 January, the fresh seasonal nectarines container arrived in Taiwan in early January, after a 5-year absence in Taiwan.   The trade launch attracted over 30 local media and 15 importers to attend.

In the opening speech by Ian McAlister – Chair of Summerfruit Australia the address contained the important message,

“Taiwan was Australia’s 2nd largest export market for nectarines, plums and peaches to Taiwan with approximately 4500 metric tons of fruit each season prior to their market absence.  Australian peaches and nectarines are well regarded as being fresh, high in sugar and great appealing colour.

Many Australian farmers and agri-businesses have set up much of their orchards with the sole purpose of targeting Taiwan as a market for their Summerfruit.  With the re-opening of the market access to Taiwan, the Summerfruit growers are hoping to rebuild the market shares in next few years.”

Mr. McAlister also mentioned that the re-launch was the culmination of five years of tireless work by a large number of industry people in Australia and the respective authorities from both countries for the collaborative result.

The trade launch was hosted by a local celebrity Ms. Lee Pei-Zhan.  The program included press conference, charity auction of the 1st box of nectarines from the shipment for a local charity organization, and networking function with local importers.

In particular, to follow the tradition of Australian fruit industry, the visiting CEO Summerfruit Australia was pleased Mr. Dom Cutri of Managing Director of Cutrifruits donated the first box of freshly arrived nectarines for the charity donation.  The first box was successfully bid by one of the major Australian fruit importers at NTD100,000 (approximately A$3,500) and the money raised was donated to fund a “Free Breakfast Program” for under privileged primary school kids resided in the mountain village.

The feedback was very positive from all the attended including the importers.  The major comments were that Australian industry .Summerfruit Industry should continue the market promotion activities / program, or similar year-round event.  For instance, the industry should consider the promotion plan to be included the wholesale and retail channel. This can also help to boost the fruit sale and raise the community awareness in general.
